Incheon convened sister and friendly cities conference at UN symposium

Convened back to back with the Incheon-hosted ‘International Symposium on Sustainable Cities: Empowering Local Governments through Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing’ organized by the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD), the ‘Incheon Sister and Friendly Cities Conference” was held in ICLEI Member City Incheon Metropolitan Government, South Korea, on 28 September 2013.

Around 70 people from various local government representatives, UN, multilateral development banks, policy think tanks, private sector and civil society participated in the symposium, including delegations from Belmopan (Belize), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Dalian, Tianjin and Yantai (China), Frankfurt (Germany), Kitakyushu and Yokohama (Japan), Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia), Albay Province (Philippines), Burbank, Honolulu and Philadelphia (USA), and Haiphong (Vietnam).

Icheon’s Mayor Young-gil Song welcomed the participating cities at the opening ceremony, while ICLEI Chairman Urban Agendas and Founding Director of ICLEI East Asia, Konrad Otto-Zimmermann, gave a keynote presentation under the theme “Leadership for Sustainable Cities: resource-efficient, low-carbon, low-risk, biodiverse, resilient”.

UNOSD shared good practices and lessons learned on how to foster sustainable cities, as well as identifying critical areas that require further capacity building: planning urban development for a sustainable future; meeting water and sanitation needs in urban areas; powering urban economic growth; managing urban transport; addressing poverty through slum upgrading.
