2026 EACNCA | Seoul: From Single-use to Waste-Zero Pathway
Around the world, cities account for approximately 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and this situation is unlikely to improve if they continue to be fueled by a carbon-intensive energy mix. Since 2024, the East Asia Carbon Neutral Cities Accelerator Case Series has showcased innovative practices and governance experiences of cities on their path towards carbon neutrality, analyzing their practicability, replicability, and outcomes. Drawing on existing policy and project implementation experience, the series encourages peer cities to translate climate ambition into practical local action through strong political commitment, infrastructure improvement, technology innovation, partnerships, and citizen involvement.
Seoul is expanding the use of reusable containers at stadiums, festivals, public facilities, and through delivery services. The city combines regulations, financial incentives, and partnerships with businesses to make reuse more accessible and reduce reliance on single-use products. These efforts are helping bring waste reduction into everyday life and build a more circular urban system.
