Strengthening Climate Resilience: ICLEI East Asia’s Capacity Building Program with Partnerships for Community Development (PCD) and the China Environmental Grantmakers Alliance (CEGA)
ICLEI East Asia, in collaboration with the Partnerships for Community Development (PCD) and China Environmental Grantmaker Alliance (CEGA), is hosting a training program for China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment and civil society representatives from December 8 to 14, 2024. This program explores urban climate adaptation and resilience, aiming to foster collaboration between Korea and China for sustainable urban development.
The delegation will visit leading cities like Seoul Metropolitan City, Incheon Metropolitan City, and Suwon Special City to learn about their strategies for climate action. Key sessions will focus on sharing knowledge and experience on Seoul’s innovative disaster management system, its citizen-led Citizens Committee for Green Seoul, and community-driven urban farming initiatives in Seoul.
The delegation will engage with key sites in these cities that are taking meaningful steps to combat climate change, enhance urban resilience, and foster greater community involvement. For example, a visit to the Jungnang Water Regeneration Center will offer participants a firsthand experience of Seoul’s wastewater and sewage treatment technologies. This will provide a foundation for discussions on how similar practices can be adapted in Chinese cities to enhance water sustainability.
Interactive sessions with local government officials and sustainability experts aim to deepen bilateral ties and establish frameworks for long-term cooperation on sustainability and climate resilience.
Since hosting the ICLEI East Asia Secretariat in 2012, Seoul has positioned itself as a regional leader in international cooperation on sustainable development. Through this program, Seoul is further solidifying its role in fostering global partnerships that align with its commitment to carbon neutrality and resilient urban development.
The program also underscores ICLEI East Asia’s mission to strengthen regional networks and empower local governments to drive climate action. By bridging knowledge gaps and cultivating cross-border collaboration, the initiative highlights the potential for transformative impact at both the local and regional levels.
With 15 participants representing China’s civil society and government, the program offers a platform for dialogue, learning, and collaboration. Participants have expressed optimism about implementing Korean best practices in their communities.
ICLEI East Asia remains committed to advancing international cooperation for sustainability, and this training program represents a vital step toward realizing a shared vision for a resilient, sustainable future.
